The All India Bank Employees Association has declared a series of strikes from December 4 to January 20, 2024, citing acute staff shortages and banks’ reluctance to hire adequately. The union plans a two-day nationwide strike from January 19-20, 2024, encompassing all banks, including private ones. Initially targeting specific banks from December 4-8, the strike will later extend across regions from January 2-6. Private banks face a separate strike on December 11. The union alleges that despite a surge in customers and business, the increasing workload is unbearable due to inadequate staffing. Vacancies from retirements, promotions, and deaths are reportedly not being filled, impacting customer satisfaction and causing friction. The union accuses the government and banks of deliberately reducing clerical and subordinate staff while increasing supervisory roles.
