Google Pay, Amazon Pay, PhonePe, Cred, and Mobikwik are seeking to join the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) digital currency pilot, the e-rupee. Launched in December 2022, the pilot aims to offer a digital alternative to physical currency. Initially limited to banks, the RBI recently allowed payment firms to offer e-rupee transactions. The collaboration with the RBI and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) could start in the next three-to-four months. The move seeks to revive e-rupee usage, which has dropped from over 1 million to about 100,000-200,000 daily transactions.
