Representatives from major laptop manufacturers, including Dell, Acer, Samsung, Panasonic, Apple, Lenovo, and HP, met with Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar to discuss concerns related to the recent government notification imposing import restrictions on personal computers, laptops, and tablets. The companies requested a more extended transition period, citing the need for 6-12 months to commence local manufacturing in India. The government had initially mandated licenses for bulk imports of these electronics, subsequently deferring the decision to November 1 amid public outcry. The companies also sought clarity on the license procurement process, while the government acknowledged the haste in implementing import restrictions, possibly driven by the aim to boost the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large electronics.
