India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is set to acquire Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG), its Japanese parent’s subsidiary, for a total consideration of Rs 12,841.1 Crores. The move aims to simplify operations and management in the country. SMG operates a substantial car manufacturing plant in Gujarat, providing finished cars to Maruti Suzuki. The acquisition aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s plans for increased production capacity and managing the complexity of multiple powertrains, including EVs, hybrids, CNG, and ethanol, as part of the transition to carbon neutrality. The transaction is expected to be completed by March 31, 2024.
