In a significant development, the Income Tax department assured the Supreme Court that it would refrain from taking any coercive action against the Indian National Congress regarding tax demands amounting to approximately ₹3,500 crore. The department cited the ongoing General Elections as the reason behind its decision, expressing a desire to avoid causing problems for any political party. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta conveyed this stance during a hearing before the Supreme Court, indicating that no coercive steps would be taken until the case is revisited on July 24, 2024.
