The Supreme Court of India has upheld the Union government’s 2019 amendment to Article 370, revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, stated that Jammu and Kashmir lacked internal sovereignty post-accession to India. While affirming the validity of the Constitutional order, the court declared the reorganization into Union Territories as a temporary measure, urging the restoration of statehood and the conduct of Legislative Assembly elections. Justice Kaul suggested establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission for acknowledging alleged violations in J&K.
