To combat the rising issue of cyber fraud in India, the government has announced new regulations that discontinue the sale of bulk SIM cards by dealers and impose a fine of Rs 10 lakh on dealers found engaging in such practices. The new rules also require dealers to register, undergo police verification, and complete a biometric process. These regulations will take effect on October 1, 2023, giving dealers six months to comply. Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) will only issue SIM cards to registered dealers, and any misconduct can result in a fine imposed by the telcos. The measures aim to reduce fraudulent cases and enhance user protection.
