Leonard Allen Cure, a Black man who spent over 16 years wrongfully imprisoned in Florida, was fatally shot by a Georgia sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop. Cure had been exonerated and released from prison in 2020 with the help of the Innocence Project of Florida. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting, which occurred after Cure was pulled over, initially cooperated, but became violent when told he was being arrested. The deputy used a stun gun, baton, and then his gun to subdue Cure, who continued to resist. Cure’s case highlights the challenges faced by wrongfully convicted individuals, even after their release.
