In 1986, a calamity struck Sannati village in Karnataka, partially damaging the Chandralamba temple complex. During the debris clearance, villagers discovered a damaged idol of Kali with ancient inscriptions on its base. Historians decoded these as a 2000-year-old Ashokan edict. This led to an excavation at Kanaganahalli village, revealing the Adholoka Maha Chaitya (Great Stupa) of the Ashokan era. The excavation unearthed a sculpture of Emperor Ashoka and numerous artifacts, igniting global interest. Despite neglect, recent restoration efforts aim to revive the site, potentially earning it UNESCO recognition and boosting tourism, especially from Buddhist-majority nations.
