The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court is now authorized to hear all public interest litigation (PIL) petitions concerning the entire state, following the restoration of its jurisdiction. A revision petition by the Madurai Bench Bar Association successfully recalled a previous order limiting the bench’s scope. The Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala, acknowledged the absence of any such restriction in the 2004 presidential notification establishing the Madurai Bench. The decision ensures equitable access to justice, allowing cases to be heard in either Madurai or Chennai based on the Chief Justice’s discretion.
