The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the permission for investment and trading of Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) at the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Gandhinagar. This decision follows the government’s issuance of SGrBs in January 2023 and subsequent inclusion in the government borrowing calendar for 2023-24. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) registered with SEBI were initially allowed to invest in SGrBs. Now, eligible foreign investors in IFSC will also have the opportunity to invest in these bonds. The move aims to enhance non-resident participation in SGrBs, with a separate scheme for investment and trading being developed in consultation with the government and IFSC Authority.
