A study, including researchers from the University of East Anglia, warns that about a third of China’s urban population faces the threat of land subsidence. This phenomenon, largely driven by human activities like groundwater withdrawal, poses a significant risk to coastal cities like Tianjin and Shanghai. The research, analyzing 82 cities, predicts that by 2120, the urban area below sea level in China could triple, potentially affecting millions. Urgent action is needed to address this issue and incorporate it into climate resilience plans to prevent catastrophic consequences.
