A group of Australian lawmakers, including former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, plans to travel to Washington to lobby the United States to drop its efforts to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Assange, an Australian citizen, has been fighting extradition to the U.S. from Britain’s Belmarsh Prison, where he’s spent the past four years. He faces charges of espionage for publishing classified military and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks and could be sentenced to up to 175 years in prison if found guilty. The delegation aims to draw attention to the issue ahead of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit to the White House in October.
