India is exploring direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting technology to deliver multimedia content to smartphones without an internet connection. This initiative involves collaboration between the Department of Telecom, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, IIT Kanpur, and Prasar Bharati. D2M technology, traditionally used for emergency alerts and disaster management, could serve various applications, including citizen-centric information broadcasting and delivering live news. However, current mobile devices lack support for this technology, requiring the adoption of the ATSC 3.0 standard and additional hardware components to make them compatible.
