The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to enforce the Tamil Nadu Heritage Commission Act of 2012 (as amended in 2017), which had been pending for 12 years since its enactment. The court’s directive followed the submission of the State Government Pleader that the amended Act had been notified and came into effect from March 1, 2024. The order mandates the constitution of the heritage commission to preserve the state’s heritage structures. The court emphasized the importance of implementing the Act and instructed the authorities to take necessary steps, following a public interest litigation petition filed by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
