Despite China’s longstanding ban on foreign messaging platforms like WhatsApp, some users in Beijing and Shanghai have reported unhindered access to the service, even without virtual private networks (VPNs). This anomaly, observed over a two-week period, contrasts with the country’s strict internet regulations. While WhatsApp’s encryption poses challenges for policing, its availability amidst the ban raises questions about network restrictions and potential glitches. The resurfacing of access coincides with Apple’s removal of WhatsApp and other social media apps from its Chinese app store, aligning with Beijing’s efforts to reinforce internet censorship.
