The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated that food business operators (FBOs) remove ‘100% fruit juices’ claims from labels and advertisements of reconstituted juices immediately. FSSAI noted misleading marketing practices where reconstituted juices, mainly composed of water, were inaccurately labeled as pure fruit juice. The directive requires the term “reconstituted” to be clearly mentioned and mandates labeling as ‘Sweetened juice’ if added sweeteners exceed 15 gm/kg. Existing packaging materials must be exhausted by September 1, 2024.
