In May 2024, India’s major ports saw a 6% increase in cargo handling to 72 million tonnes, driven by a 7.3% rise in overseas cargo. This growth is attributed partly to spillover transshipment cargo amid Asian port congestion. The Ministry of Ports reported a 4.02% year-on-year increase in April-May, totaling 139.3 million tonnes. Crude oil and POL products constituted 29% of cargo, growing by nearly 7%, while foodgrains surged by 270%. Gujarat’s Deendayal Port Authority marked a significant recovery with a 23% rise in overseas cargo, aiming to compete with private ports like Mundra and Pipavav.
