A Chinese rocket carrying a satellite passed over southern Taiwan on Saturday, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence (MND) reported, but posed no threat. Launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan, the rocket was exoatmospheric when over Taiwan. Taiwan’s MND had preemptively alerted the public and monitored the launch closely. This incident follows a January air raid alert in Taiwan due to a Chinese satellite. The overflight comes just before Taiwan’s presidential elections on January 13, with China framing the elections as a choice between “war and peace.”
