The Ministry of Railways is facing delays in importing forged wheels crucial for high-speed trains and locomotives due to a global shortage of shipping containers caused by the Red Sea crisis. This delay, expected to continue until August, has prompted the allocation of only essential quantities from existing shipments. The government, which previously imported these wheels from China in 2022, is now emphasizing domestic production to meet demand. Despite challenges, a new Rs 12,000-crore facility aims to make India an exporter of forged wheels, addressing the annual requirement of 80,000 units for Indian Railways.
