Google has acquired a stake in Taiwan’s New Green Power (NGP) to potentially procure up to 300 megawatts of renewable energy, aiming to reduce both its own and suppliers’ carbon footprints. The move supports Google’s ambition to operate on carbon-free energy globally, crucial amid rising emissions from data processing. Taiwan, a hub for Google’s cloud technology, currently relies heavily on fossil fuels for electricity. The investment in NGP, a key solar developer in Taiwan, aims to bolster a 1 gigawatt solar pipeline, aiding Taiwan’s goal of 20 GW solar capacity by 2025.
