India has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) from July 1, 2023, marking a significant legal overhaul. The first criminal case under BNS was registered at Hyderabad’s Rajendranagar police station, where an FIR was filed under section 104 following a fatal car accident on the PVNR Expressway. The victim, Sai Ganesh, 25, died after his car crashed into a divider. BNS, comprising 358 sections, introduces new crimes, increased penalties, and reforms to enhance legal efficacy.
