Amit Shah, India’s Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, has highlighted the immense potential of the country’s 120-year-old cooperative sector in boosting the economy, driving development, and providing extensive employment opportunities. Speaking at the Laxmanrao Inamdar Memorial Lecture organized by the University of Mumbai and Sahakar Bharti, Shah spotlighted the success of the Amul cooperative model, which has inspired over 3.60 million women to engage in milk-related businesses across India, creating a market worth Rs 60,000 crore with just Rs 100 investments each. Shah stressed that cooperation between the cooperative sector and national economic institutions is essential for India’s progress, and cooperatives have been crucial in rural development and agriculture since the 1960s. This approach empowers local communities, promotes self-sufficiency, and addresses rural-urban migration challenges while providing vital employment opportunities.
