United Auto Workers (UAW) has expanded strikes against Detroit automakers, directing 7,000 more workers in Illinois and Michigan to join the picket line. This marks the second time the union has widened the walkouts since they began two weeks ago. The strikes initially targeted three assembly plants and later added a Ford plant in Chicago and a General Motors factory near Lansing. UAW President Shawn Fain cited the lack of meaningful progress in contract talks with Ford and GM as the reason for the escalation. Ford accused UAW of delaying a deal over union representation at electric vehicle battery plants. GM blamed union leaders for the impasse, and the war of words escalated. The UAW is still engaged in negotiations with the companies and expressed hope for reaching agreements.
