The approval of the Rosebank oil field, the UK’s largest, by the British government has ignited controversy, drawing criticism from environmental activists and political opposition. The project, located in the North Sea, is spearheaded by Norwegian oil company Equinor in a joint venture with British firm Ithaca. It involves drilling for oil at a depth of 1100 meters underwater and is estimated to pump 300 million barrels, constituting 8% of the UK’s total oil production. The decision has raised concerns about environmental impact, carbon emissions, and the UK’s commitment to net-zero goals, triggering protests and opposition from climate activists and some political quarters.
