Armenia has urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to impose new interim orders on Azerbaijan to prevent what it calls “ethnic cleansing” of the Nagorno-Karabakh region from becoming irreversible. The ICJ is considering 10 “provisional measures” aimed at protecting the rights of ethnic Armenians from the Nagorno-Karabakh region that Azerbaijan reclaimed last month. Armenia’s legal team argued that targeted and unequivocal provisional measures are necessary to prevent ongoing ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan’s response is expected later in the day. The ICJ has already issued provisional measures in cases filed by both Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding racial discrimination accusations.
