Metalworkers at General Motors’ Brazilian plants are going on an indefinite strike to protest against the automaker’s layoffs in the country. GM recently announced workforce reductions at its three Sao Paulo state factories due to declining sales and exports. The Sindmetal union, representing the workers, said production will only resume once the job cuts are canceled and job stability is guaranteed. While GM confirmed the layoffs, it did not immediately comment on the strike. The company cited the necessity of the move for its operational agility. The strike impacts plants in Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Caetano do Sul, and Mogi das Cruzes.
