West Bengal Minister Jyoti Priya Mullick was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with irregularities in the state’s public distribution system (PDS). The arrest followed nearly 20 hours of raids on eight of Mullick’s properties. Mullick, who was in charge of the state’s Food and Supplies Department, termed the arrest a conspiracy, blaming the BJP and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. This arrest marks the second instance of a sitting minister being apprehended by the ED, following the arrest of former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in the school job recruitment scam. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the ED’s actions and expressed concern for Mullick’s well-being.
