The UN Security Council has passed its first resolution since the Israel-Hamas war outbreak, urging “urgent and extended humanitarian pauses” in Gaza. The 12-0 vote saw the US, UK, and Russia abstaining, citing issues like the failure to condemn Hamas’ cross-border attacks. The resolution, sponsored by Malta, shifted language from “demands” to “calls” for pauses and the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas.” Despite compromises, it marks progress after differences hindered previous resolutions. Malta’s UN Ambassador, Vanessa Frazier, termed it an “important first step” toward protecting civilians and addressing the plight of children in conflict.
