The Indian government is set to meet with major social media platforms, including Meta and Google, to address concerns about the proliferation of deepfake content. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that platforms need to take more aggressive action against deepfakes, and the safe harbour immunity under the IT Act won’t apply if they don’t. Recently, ‘deepfake’ videos targeting celebrities sparked outrage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned about the potential crisis and discontent caused by AI-generated deepfakes, urging media awareness. The upcoming meeting aims to discuss preventive measures and emphasize the responsibility of platforms in tackling this issue.
