Indonesian police and fishermen have increased patrols along the coastline in the westernmost province of Aceh to prevent Rohingya refugees from landing. Nearly 1,100 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have arrived in Aceh this month, with locals in some areas attempting to turn back boats at sea. The police in East Aceh have implemented round-the-clock patrols to intensify surveillance along the coastline and in the Malacca Strait. Concerns are raised that Indonesia may tighten its borders to deter Rohingya landings, following similar measures by Malaysia, Thailand, and India. Indonesia is not a signatory to the UN refugee convention.
