A Harvard University-led study, based on satellite data, reveals “extreme” methane emissions from a natural gas pipeline in Mexico’s Durango state in 2019. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, poses a severe climate threat. The researchers traced the emissions to the El Encino-La Laguna pipeline, transporting gas from the U.S. to Mexico. The study highlights emissions ranging from 260 to 550 tonnes per hour on May 12, 2019. The responsible party and the cause remain unclear. The pipeline is owned by Mexico’s state-owned CFE and operated by Fermaca Pipeline El Encino. Mexican companies, including Pemex, face criticism for lagging in emissions mitigation.
