A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Aceh province on December 30, centered 362 km east of Sinabang, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The shallow undersea quake prompted warnings from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency about possible aftershocks, but no tsunami danger was reported. While there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties, Indonesia, located on the “Ring of Fire,” is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The region had experienced a deadly magnitude 5.6 earthquake on November 21, killing at least 331 people in West Java’s Cianjur city.
