The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the EG.5 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including its sub-lineages, as a “variant of interest” (VOI). EG.5 is a descendant lineage of the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.9.2 and has an additional mutation in the spike protein compared to its parent subvariant. Although EG.5 has shown increased prevalence, growth advantage, and immune escape properties, the WHO states that, based on available evidence, the public health risk at the global level is low. However, due to its characteristics, EG.5 may cause a rise in case incidence and become dominant in some countries. The WHO recommends countries prioritize actions to address uncertainties related to antibody escape and severity of EG.5.
