Heavy rain in China’s southwest triggered evacuations of around 81,000 people due to collapsing hillsides and traffic disruptions. In the west, a mudslide led to two deaths and 16 missing individuals. Simultaneously, a powerful storm in the northeast caused a river dike breach and the cancellation of over 20 trains. Storm Khanun, downgraded from a typhoon, brought heavy rain to the northeast. The country has been facing severe summer floods and droughts damaging crops. In July alone, flooding and landslides caused 142 deaths, while recent heavy rainfall in Beijing and Hebei was the highest in 140 years.
