The Lebanese army arrested 134 migrants, including 130 Syrians and four Lebanese nationals, near the northern border with Syria. Their attempt to take a boat to Europe was foiled. The detainees, along with the Lebanese national who organized the operation, were apprehended in Sheikh Zennad. Another 150 Syrians who had illegally crossed into Lebanon were also detained in a separate operation in Akkar province. Lebanon’s dire economic crisis has driven its citizens and refugees, including Syrians and Palestinians, to seek dangerous sea routes to Europe. The country hosts around two million Syrians, with over 800,000 registered as refugees with the UN.
