In response to clashes in Parliament over the approval of pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet members, Maldives’ main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), is reportedly preparing to submit an impeachment motion against President Muizzu. The unrest erupted as opposition lawmakers withheld approval for four cabinet members. Pro-government MPs protested, obstructing parliamentary proceedings. The MDP and The Democrats have unanimously decided to submit the impeachment motion, gathering enough signatures for the process. President Muizzu, who defeated the India-friendly incumbent last year, has recently requested the withdrawal of 88 Indian military personnel from Maldives.
