After a devastating wildfire in the Maui community of Lahaina, more than 800 people remain unaccounted for. Authorities are facing challenges in determining how many of those missing may have perished and how many are safe but haven’t checked in. This situation is reminiscent of what happened after the 2018 wildfire in Paradise, California, where authorities ultimately published a list of missing individuals in the local newspaper to help identify those who had made it out alive but were listed as missing. Maui authorities, however, have chosen not to publicize their list due to concerns about privacy rules and the potential to traumatize families of those listed as missing. Various sources have provided widely varying accounts of the number of missing individuals, making the situation complex and challenging. The American Red Cross is involved in reunification efforts and has successfully completed many requests, but identifying human remains after a wildfire can be a difficult and lengthy process.
