The Animal Husbandry department in Kerala is undertaking efforts to conserve the unique indigenous breed of dwarf cows known as Thenmala Kullan. Characterized by a small hump and reared by tribespeople in Arippa and Thenmala, these cows thrive on forest-based fodder and produce nutrient-rich A2 milk. The department, in collaboration with Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), aims to conduct studies to register Thenmala Kullan as a distinct indigenous breed. Scientific evaluation will assess breed-specific traits, including population size, physical features, thermal tolerance, and immunity, before seeking recognition from the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR).
