Men who claim they were sexually abused by Japanese boy band producer Johnny Kitagawa are demanding an apology and compensation from Johnny & Associates, a powerful entity in Japan’s entertainment industry. The accusers allege that Kitagawa preyed on young dancers and singers for decades, offering promises of fame, cash, and accommodations at his luxury home in exchange for sexual favors.
The victims, who have been largely ignored by the company and mainstream media, expressed their desire for accountability and prevention measures at a news conference. Johnny & Associates’ Chief Executive, Julie Keiko Fujishima, released a statement on YouTube in May but has not personally addressed the accusations.
A special team within the company has interviewed 23 accusers, with the number expected to rise to several hundred. The team recommended Fujishima’s resignation. The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights has called on the Japanese government to ensure that Johnny’s provides an apology and compensation while enhancing government oversight of businesses. Japan’s slow response to issues related to gender equality, children’s rights, and awareness about sexuality has been a concern.
