Amnesty International has reported widespread surveillance and punishment of women in Iran for violating the obligatory headscarf rule, even inside cars, with instances of vehicle confiscation. Despite mass protests in 2022 against the dress code, Iran’s leadership remains firm on enforcing the hijab imposed since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The report highlights “sinister” tactics of constant surveillance and policing, with women facing denial of transport, banking services, and airport access if not wearing a headscarf. Amnesty condemns these “draconian tactics” and cites cases like Roya Heshmati’s, who received 74 lashes for appearing unveiled in public in January 2024, as examples of the harsh enforcement measures.
