The annual Amarnath Yatra began on June 29, 2024, as the first group of pilgrims departed from Baltal and Nunwan base camps to the 3880-meter-high cave shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas. Pilgrims are traveling via the 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam and 14-km Baltal routes. The journey was flagged off by deputy commissioners and senior officials. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha initiated the first batch of 4,603 pilgrims from Jammu. The yatra, lasting until August 19, includes extensive security measures with thousands of personnel and aerial surveillance ensuring the safety of the participants.
