Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has confirmed that Apple extended its patent license agreement for Qualcomm’s 5G modems until March 2027. Initially extended to 2026 last year, the deal allows Apple to continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modems. While Apple has been working on in-house modems since acquiring Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019, reports suggest challenges in the development process, prompting Apple to focus on 6G cellular modems. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted Apple’s reluctance to rely on Qualcomm for critical iPhone components. The contract extension implies ongoing hurdles in Apple’s efforts to produce its own modem chips. Apple has not officially commented on the extension.
