Apple is set to unveil generative artificial intelligence features at its developers conference, leveraging OpenELM models for on-device AI tasks on iOS 18. The OpenELM series, released on the Hugging Face model library, offers four small language models suitable for devices like iPhones and PCs. Ranging from 270 million to 3 billion parameters, these models enable text-related tasks such as generation and summarization. While Apple is also reportedly developing its large language model, these on-device models indicate a move towards local AI processing, potentially supplemented by cloud-based solutions from Google or Microsoft-backed OpenAI.
