An armed militia group, identified as Mobondo, carried out an attack in southwestern Congo, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people. The attack occurred in the village of Ipongi, around 370 kilometers south of the capital Kinshasa. The violence stemmed from intercommunal tensions between the Teke and Yaka ethnic groups over land rights and taxes. The conflict, largely overshadowed by other crises, has escalated with over 300 fatalities between June 2022 and March 2023. In the larger context, Congo faces numerous conflicts driven by armed groups fighting for control of resources and protection in various regions.
