The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India has mandated that dust grades of tea must be sold through public auctions. Additionally, at least 50% of other grades of tea, including orthodox and granular CTC (crush, tear, and curl), should reach the markets through the auction route. The move aims to ensure “fair price discovery” for the tea industry, which is facing challenges, and to curb direct selling where buyers dictate prices. The transition to 100% auction for dust grades represents a step towards restructuring the existing system, according to the Tea Association of India (TAI).
