Australia has revealed its “preferred model” for new vehicle emission standards, aligning with U.S. standards by 2028. The policy aims to increase electric vehicle (EV) adoption, part of the government’s climate reforms promised upon winning power in 2022. Australia, apart from Russia, is the only developed country without or developing fuel efficiency standards. The proposed standard, set for January 1, 2025, could save motorists $65 billion in fuel costs by 2050. The move supports the government’s goal to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030, with transport being a major contributor to the country’s emissions.
