Bahrain, already combating extreme heat, is now addressing the threat of rising sea levels due to climate change. The nation, vulnerable due to its low-lying coastal areas, plans to construct coastal defenses by widening beaches, building taller sea walls, and elevating land. Sea levels have been rising at a rate of 1.6 to 3.4 millimeters annually since 1976, and experts estimate a rise of at least 0.5 meters by 2050. Bahrain’s comprehensive plan, to be completed within a decade, will involve beach expansion, rock walls, and land reclamation. It aims to protect against flooding, shoreline erosion, and groundwater pollution from saltwater intrusion.
