The Centre has filed a writ appeal in the Madras High Court against the June 6, 2023 order of a single judge who set aside the Directorate General of Foreign Trade’s (DGFT) 2016 notification imposing a ban on dog imports. The appeal contends that the judge’s decision was “incorrect” and lists the case for November 8. The earlier order had been in response to writ petitions filed in 2016 and 2017 by the Kennel Club of India, the Madras Canine Club, and a dog lover challenging the ban. The appeal argues that the DGFT has the authority to issue such notifications.
