Tens of thousands of Bangladeshis are evacuating coastal villages as Cyclone Remal is set to hit Sunday evening, with winds up to 130 km/h and a possible storm surge of 12 feet. Authorities have raised the danger signal to the highest level, warning fishermen and initiating mass evacuations. About 4,000 shelters and 78,000 volunteers are mobilized to assist. Cyclone shelters also accommodate livestock. Ports and Chittagong airport are closed, and preparations include evacuating 36,000 Rohingya refugees on Bhashan Char island. Climate change has increased the frequency of such superstorms in Bangladesh.
